Leave it to Eagle Park Brewing and Distillery to take the beer slushie concept one step further.
The Muskego brewery is serving beer “ice cream” on cones.
The brewery purchased the from the creator and machine manufacturer in Illinois. Mikerphone in Elk Grove Village also has one of the machines that whip the beer into something unique.
The soft-serve machine — it looks like an espresso maker behind the bar — made its debut Friday. There currently are two flavors — a blueberry tangerine fruited sour beer combined with lactose sugar and just a splash of in-house vodka; and a similar version made with raspberries and passion fruit.
“I could not believe how creamy it was in texture,” said Jake Schinker, an owner of Eagle Park along with Max and Jackson Borgardt.
The “ice cream” starts off like a fruit slushie because the machine keeps it so cold. As it melts, it takes on a creamier mouth feel. It finishes with a beer taste.
Cones are filled as they are at Dairy Queen, but obviously have a little more kick by maintaining the ABV (alcohol by volume) of the beer they’re made with. Schinker said they tested the machine with the brewery’s Double No More Imperial stout with coconut, chocolate and almond, and it held the 12% ABV.
Eagle Park is working on a couple of creative ideas for the soft-serve machine, including pop-up nights to serve cones with toppings (think Double No More with chocolate syrup).
In time and with some legal blessing, Eagle Park hopes to sell the boozed-up dessert to go.
The cones cost the same price as a half-pour of the beer they contain. For now, only the Eagle Park Brewing and Distillery, S64-W15680 Commerce Center Parkway, Muskego is serving the edible drink. Schinker said they are considering adding it at the brewery’s Milwaukee location, 823 E. Hamilton St.
